Description: Not every book will have a wide range of individuals interested in reading it and this book might be one of them as the topic is not usually broadly discussed. In addition, the author’s claims “that all diseases are the result of “toxemia” are regarded as quackery by medical experts. He was described as a food faddiest and quack by the American Medical Association” but review of the chapter headings and topics it could be argued there is value in this small volume. While “toxemia” is not the cause of all disease, the chapters covering “Causes and Treatment” have some interesting facts but the chapters on “Constipation as Found in Various Derangements and A Few Personalities” might give you pause but are fun historical medical reading none the less. Also, included is a small brochure titled “Toxemia” written by Dr. Arthur Vox, 1925. Condition: Dark maroon textured cloth hardbound boards with blind stamped gold gilt text to the spine and front cover. The boards and spine back strip are in very good condition except for a small blemish to the back strip where the fabric has been damaged, stain to front cover at back strip, and a cosmetic blemish to the lower rear board (see photos). There is no wear or rubbing to the spine or boards, but while the corners are sharp, they have a tiny bit of wear at the tips. Spine has a very slight slant but is firm with no cracking to the endpapers. Text block is solid with all pages attached. Age tanning throughout. Interior pages are clean with no tears, cracks, or previous owner marks. 208 pages including index. Dimensions: H – 7-1/2” W – 5-1/4” John Henry Tilden (1851 – 1940) began his study of medicine working under practicing physicians (his father and others) and by 1879 completing more formal training. He later went on to become a natural hygiene proponent best known in circles of alternative healthcare for his criticism of pharmaceutics and for his theory explaining disease via “toxemia” which influenced the field of naturopathy. Moving from the Midwest in 1890 to Denver, Colorado in 1916, he established the “Tilden School for Teaching Health” as a private residential teaching institution and sanitarium where he offered patients his alternative to the standard medical practices of the day. Doubting drug treatment favored preventive healthcare and was the author of a monthly magazine and numerous books.
