Description: May Day - New Haven: An Information Newspaper Author: Committee to Defend the Panthers Title: May Day - New Haven: An Information Newspaper Publication: [New Haven, Conn.]: View from the Bottom; Yale Strike News; Committee to Defend the Panthers, [1970] Description: A one-off publication issued to publicize a weekend of events in support of the ‘New Haven Nine' beginning on May Day, 1970. The ‘New Haven Nine' was a group of Black Panthers imprisoned for the murder of fellow Black Panther, Alex Rackley, who they suspected of being a police informant. Instead of tarnishing the Panthers' reputation, it galvanized thousands of (mostly) white radicals who descended on New Haven to demand the release of Panther leader, Bobby Seale. Yale's administration, along with student leaders and activists, strategized about minimizing violence, which paid off as New Haven/Yale remained largely unscathed.Content is a mix of articles in support of Seale and the Black Panthers, exposés of Yale's complicity in driving inequality around New Haven, and medical, legal and tactical advice for the protests. A centerfold map features a Black Panther and a bulldog, Yale's mascot, along with the location of first aid stations and telephones. Tabloid format printed in red and black on newsprint, 12 p., photographs, centerfold map. Numbers scribbled to the bottom of the front cover, toning to newsprint, but a near fine copy.
