Commentary On The Pearl Of Great Price Jerald Johansen Donl Peterson Mormon LDS

Description: Two Books: A Commentary On The Pearl Of Great Price By Jerald R. Johansen 183 pages Among the canonized Latter-day Saint doctrinal sources, there is no book with more profound insights into the truths of eternity than the Pearl of Great Price. Truly it is a jewel among the scriptures. And among the guides to understanding the ancient portions of that marvelous book, no light shines brighter than the enlightenment found in this valuable commentary. This book deals primarily with the Pearl of Great Price books of Moses and Abraham. Recognizing that the writings of Joseph Smith are usually treated as the basis for studies in LDS Church history, the author has chosen to omit coverage of those portions in his book in order to consider the ancient writings in greater depth. After giving a useful overview of the Pearl of Great Price, he reviews how these ancient books were received and published by the Church. He then moves back in time to study and draw meanings from the pre-mortal Council in Heaven, the creation of the earth, man’s conditions before the fall of Adam, and the significance of that fall. He explains the experiences of Adam and Eve, and analyzes the first great apostasy which occurred when children rejected the gospel. A chapter considers the deeper roots of the black civilization. Another treats the prophet Enoch’s panoramic vision of the world. The writings of Abraham are also treated in depth, in a similar manner. Recent research has opened up new understandings, and these matters are treated in the later chapters of the book. For instance, along with the writings of Abraham, Joseph Smith received another scroll containing the writings of Joseph of Egypt. The author discusses what is known concerning those writings. He also deals with the recent discovery of the Egyptian Book of Breathings, telling how it was found, and presents interesting new insights on the Egyptian “endowment.” A final chapter shows relationships between the LDS temple ceremony and the Egyptian papyri. The writing shows the abilities of a competent teacher. Each chapter, for instance, ends with a detailed summary. A very detailed index makes the book especially easy to use. Horizon takes pleasure in introducing this very useful and thought-provoking commentary, and highly recommends it to those who are seeking new insights and the latest findings on the ancient scriptures.Hardcover with worn dust jacket, personal note from the author on the inside cover, good binding, clean pages no writing, great for any collection. The Pearl Of Great Price, A History And Commentary By H. Donl Peterson 400 pages This is a great resource for those who want to study the Pearl of Great price. It tells of its history and also gives a commentary on each of the verses. The Pearl of Great Price, one of only four books upon which the Lord has placed his seal of approval, as Holy Scripture. The most compact of the standard works, it contains only sixty-one pages. Profound doctrine is pronounced in the first few verses, and that pattern continues throughout the entire text. The original preface of the Pearl of Great Price states that it was "not adapted, nor designed, as a pioneer of the faith among unbelievers." It was compiled to strengthen the missionaries and the Saints in Great Britain, to "increase their ability to maintain and to defend the holy faith by becoming possessors of it." This History and Commentary has been written to fill the need of the Latter-day Saints for an up-to-date, comprehensive history and commentary on the Pearl of Great Price. The book is divided into two major sections: the history and the commentary. The history explain the origin and development of the Pearl of Great Price; the origins of the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible, from which the book of Moses and Joseph Smith-- Matthew were extracted; the coming forth of the book of Abraham from its entombment in Egypt until it was safely in the hands of the Prophet Joseph Smith; the origin and development of the history of the Church written by the Prophet, a segment of which is found in the Pearl of Great Price as Joseph Smith--History; and the origin of the Articles of Faith. Hardcover no dust jacket, good binding, clean pages no writing, great for any collection.
