Description: This African made flat plate basket was hand woven in Africa by the by Hutus and Tutsis tribal rural women of Rwanda who have a long history as basket weavers. This Rwanda basket was made using the traditional woven coiled method so it is woven in a coil like fashion with the backside having a slightly rougher design and the front of the flat basket being smoother in appearance. The backside of the basket has a small fiber hanging loop. The plant fibers used to create this basket are banana leaf fibers and raffia, which comes from palm trees. Natural dyes are used to create the colorations of the raffia patterns on this woven basket. Each basket varies in size and design displaying the desires of the individual weaver. This Rwandan basket measures 10 inches across from one side to the other, 0.36 inches tall and has an outer circumference of 31.25 inches around. These African woven baskets are traditionally used for serving food and harvesting food in Rwanda. This piece would be great for home decoration as this basket has a small woven loop on its backside for hanging on a wall or would be perfect for fruit or other food service to carry on the tradition of using these baskets how they were intended.
