This was built under the auspices of the Virginia Central Railroad which started west from Charlottesville in 1850 with Staunton as the initial goal. The area between Meacham’s River and Waynesboro featured four significant tunnels of which Blue Ridge Tunnel was the largest. The line was completed in 1857. It went on to handle the primary passenger service in the area as well as many C&O manifest freights. The books treats the subject with a pictorial moving point-to-point over the system.
