Description: This is a custom figure commemorating possibly the greatest Apache chief and war leader of the old West, Cochise. The Apache were very loyal to their friends, devoted to family, and fierce warriors in battle, An Apache could travel 50 miles on foot without stopping and were among the best guerilla fighters in history. This nomadic people were called Apachu (enemy) by the Pueblo people. The name was adopted by the Spanish invaders in the 16th Century, then by the Americans. The Spanish and Mexicans would be locked in a bitter, brutal struggle with the Apache for 330 years. The Spanish offered bounty for Apache scalps and forced captives into slavery to work their silver mines. Cochise was born in 1805. His name loosely translated means oak or having the strength or quality of oak. Cochise became a great Apache chief. The Apache mostly won the war against the Spanish and Mexican people of the southwest. After the Mexican war the United States acquired much of the land inhabited by the Apache. There was a kind of peace for awhile. It is thought that Cochise and his people even supplied the Butterfield stage line with wood. Soon however westward expansion would bring on hostilities. A band of raiding Coyotero Apache kidnapped a rancher's son Fred Ward, (later to be known as Mickey Free) as well as stealing some of his cattle. Cochise and his people were mistakenly blamed. A local Army officer, Lt. George Bascom invited Cochise to the Army camp believing Cochise and his people to be guilty of the attack. When Cochise and some of his relatives were inside the tent for the meeting Bascom accused Cochise of the attack. Cochise denied the accusations and vowed to find those responsible. Bascom ordered Cochise and his people to be arrested. Cochise lept to his feet, slit an opening in the tent and made his escape. He was possibly wounded as he left. The remaining Apache (some, Cochise's realtives remained captured. Cochise took hostages in order to trade them for the Apache captives. Bascom ordered the captives killed. Cochise then killed his captives and the conflict was on. Cochise would band together with his father-in-law Mangas Coloradas (Red Sleeves- a name given him during battle because of the blood on his sleeves from the enemies he had killed battling the Spanish) to battle the United States Government. There was a young medicine man named Geronimo that would also play a big part in the conflict. The Apache Wars would last from 1861 until a peace treaty in 1872. For a few years the Apache won most of the battles. Part of the reason for the Apache success was their ability to fight in their home terrain. The Apache were arguably some of the greatest guerilla fighters to have ever gone to battle. Another reason the Apache had early success against the US Government was the fact that the Civil War was in full swing. Troops were being called back east to participate in the Civil War leaving little resources available to deal with the Apache. Eventually, several years later General George Crook developed tactics to better battle the Apache in their own environment. General Nelson Miles would also use these tactics to finally end the Apache Wars. Cochise would die of natural causes in 1874. He is buried somewhere in his beloved mountains. This figure is designed more for display than play for the Wild West collector. Please note-The figure doesn't look exactly like Cochise but there is a bit of a resemblance. sold as is. stand included.ALSO please note the holster and belt are cutom made while the six-gun and rifle are metal made by stevos, sold as is. Please note the following-when a figure is a custom figure that means it is not a licensed product,or "official" but something the customizer did by combining figures and accessories from different makers and toy releases to come up with the custom figure or figures. I started customizing figures a few years back because I couldn't find more than a handful of "official" releases and unable to find figures of people I wanted to collect. I checked in to the market of custom figures. Most of the custom figures available back then cost several hundred dollars, so, I started doing my own. Because I needed to support my new hobby, I started selling some custom figures. My prices reflect my acquisition cost, time involved, and some profit. Thanks for the look, have fun shopping!Shipping and Handling as follows: Domestic-priority- $15.00 1st item, $8.00 each additional item. items are normally shipped out within a day or two of cleared payment.
