Now taking orders for fresh 2024, cool climate, organic black walnuts, straight from the tree, still in their husks and ready to be planted as soon as you receive them. This strain of walnuts can certainly be used for eating or baking, but they are ideally suited to be used as seed stock for planting because they have been successfully hardened to thrive in a cooler climate than typical black walnuts. For nearly three decades, Ive been using this line of cold weather acclimated black walnuts as seed stock. Successfully diversifying my reforestation projects in Northwestern Wisconsin with thousands of beautiful, highly valued, black walnut trees. Yes, I said Northwestern Wisconsin! This line of black walnut trees has been growing in a zone 3 USDA hardiness zone for generations spanning a minimum of 70yrs. Over that time, this line of black walnuts has successfully adjusted, or acclimated to a cooler climate, developing a line of black walnut trees that not only grow, but absolutely thrive in a growing season that's traditionally too cold and too short to sustain black walnut tree growth. What is the importance of using black walnut seeds that have been acclimated to a cooler climate? It's the difference between a beautiful rapidly growing walnut tree vs an unhardened walnut tree that struggles to grow as big as a small shrub because its new seasonal growth repeatedly freezes back resulting in a stunted tree. Words of wisdom: Ive seen a number of failed attempts to grow black walnut trees in Northwestern Wisconsin, including my earliest attempts. These failures can be directly attributed to using seed stock or sapling stock that has not been hardened to withstand the riggers of a cooler, shorter growing season. The walnuts featured in this offer are selectively harvested from the best performing trees I personally planted 28 years ago this fall. In fact, the 2 parent black walnut trees pictured in this posting were started by simply dropping a seed in the ground during the fall of 1996, and since then have demonstrated remarkable growth. While many people believe black walnut trees are a slow growing tree species, my personal experienced has been to the contrary. Growth rate & parent tree information: When walnut seed stock comes from a hardened source, as with the walnuts being featured in this listing, they grow very fast and at nearly the same rate as the deciduous sugar maples & white ash native to the area. After 28 years, the parent walnuts trees pictured in this listing stand nearly 50ft tall and measures approximately 12" in diameter at the stump. For comparison: a nearby sugar maple of the same age stands approximately 55 feet tall and measures approximately 13.3" in diameter at the stump. I've planted thousands of nuts from this line of black walnuts, successfully diversifying my reforestation projects. Providing several benefits for the owner, the local ecosystem and the changing climate. Besides the obvious monetary value gained from incorporating a premiere lumber species into the new woodlands, the wildlife habitat also benefits tremendously from the abundant food source these trees provide each fall. However, probably the most important benefit gained from mixing black walnuts into the new woodlands is the sustainability and the climate benefits they provide. In light of todays global climate concerns, the best way to guarantee a woodlands longevity & continued climate correction sustainability is by incorporating self-sustainable tree species, such as these black walnuts. For example, If for whatever reason my thousands of black walnut trees were removed today, there are literally thousands more black walnut seesling & saplings poised to take their place, all without any human intervention. That's true sustainability! And a longevity feature you don't get if you rely solely on your local forestry department to reforest your land. In fact, evey spring Im reminded of the black walnut's tremendous prolific nature, as black walnuts seedlings start sprouting up all over the lawn because the local squirrel population buried hoards of them during the previous fall. In addition, these trees grow relatively fast, with a growth rate roughly equal to, northwester Wisconsins native maple and ash. The best part of all is how easy and relatively inexpensive black walnuts are to plant and get started. Compared to the thousands of white pine, red pine, maple, ash & oak saplings Ive planted over the decades, black walnut are by far the easiest to plant. It doesnt get much easier than simply dropping a walnut in the ground like a seed potato. In addition, the survival rate of black walnut planted by seed is several times better than the traditional deciduous tree species I've planted and more inline with the survival rate of red & white pine. If you're looking for a large quantity(100s or 1000s) of walnuts for planting, please contact me and I can make it worth your while.
