Clark Ashton Smith was born in 1893 in Long Valley, California. He died in 1961 in Pacific Grove, California. His formal education was limited due to his suffering from psychological disorders including a fear of crowds. He was, however, an insatiable reader, and continued to teach himself after he left school. His reading included ROBINSON CRUSOE, GULLIVER’S TRAVELS, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON, THE ARABIAN NIGHTS, EDGAR ALLAN POE, and many others. At the age of 13 he also read an unabridged dictionary word for word, studying not only the definitions of the words but also their derivations from ancient languages. Having an extraordinary eidetic memory, he seems to have retained most or all of it. He also taught himself French and Spanish. At age 17, he sold several tales to The Black Cat, a magazine which specialized in unusual tales. Writing poetry also motivated the young Smith. He became a protege of the great San Francisco poet, George Sterling. A bit later Smith came into contact with literary figures who would later form part of H.P. Lovecraft’s circle of correspondents. These men included Samuel Loveman, George Kirk, and Donald Wandrei. In 1920 Smith received a letter from Lovecraft which began a 15-year friendship which included much correspondence. Between 1929 and 1934 Smith wrote more than 100 short stories, most of which were weird horror or science fiction. Most of Smith’s fiction falls into one of the four worlds that he created: Hyperborea, Poseidonis, Averoigne, and Zothique. Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard also became correspondents between1933 and 1936. Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, and H.P. Lovecraft became the three members of the great triumvirate of authors published in Weird Tales magazine. In 1942, August Derleth, the co-founder of Arkham House, published Smith’s OUT OF SPACE AND TIME. Derleth (with Arkham House) and later, even after Derleth's death, Arkham House would continue go on to publish 13 volumes of Smith’s fiction and poetry. Beyond his writing, Smith also became an expert in sculpture, beginning in 1936 and continuing throughout the rest of his life. In fact, some of Smith’s sculptures were featured via photographs on the dust jackets for some of his books. Clarke Ashton Smith was the author of such great and famous books as THE STAR-TREADER AND OTHER POEMS (his 1st book), ODES AND SONNETS, SANDALWOOD, OUT OF SPACE AND TIME (an Arkham House book), LOST WORLDS (an Arkham House book), GENIUS LOCI AND OTHER TALES (an Arkham House book), THE DARK CHATEAU (an Arkham House book), SPELLS AND PHILTRES, OTHER DIMENSIONS (an Arkham House book; offered here), Arkham House book, THE ABOMINATIONS OF YONDO (an Arkham House book), TALES OF SCIENCE AND SORCERY (an Arkham House book), and many, many others. Along with Lovecraft, Derleth, Wandrei, Howard, and several others, Clark Ashton Smith’s name is synonymous with Arkham House. Leon Nielsen. ARKHAM HOUSE BOOKS: A Collector’s Guide. (Forward by Barry Abrahams). 2004. “Collection of supernatural and science fiction tales. (1970). 329 pages. 3144 copies. Cover price: $6.50. Jacket art by Lee Brown Coye . . . The author’s last collection of weird and science fiction. The contents consist of the remaining of Smith’s earlier published fiction not already reprinted by Arkham House. No reprints. [estimated 2004 value]: $150.00.” From the dust jacket: “ . . . OTHER DIMENSIONS . . . CLARK ASHTON SMITH . . . This final collection of the short stories of Clark Ashton Smith contains no less than 26 tales -- science fiction, horror, fantasy -- the domains that Smith made uniquely his own . . . Here are ‘Marooned in Andromeda’ and ‘The Immeasurable Horror,’ ‘The Metamorphosis of Earth’ and ‘The Dimension of Chance,’ ‘The Venus of Azombeii,’ and ‘The Mahout,’ ‘The Kiss of Zoraida,’ and ‘The Ghost of Mohammed Din,’ among others. Every story in this collection demonstrates anew Smith’s mastery of the fantastic tale -- his prose style has no peer in our time -- his fertile imagination remains fresh and unexcelled -- and his way with language creates a mood of utter strangeness . . . With the passage of time, the work of Clark Ashton Smith is coming increasingly into its own -- an ever larger audience is beginning to appreciate the qualities that were his alone, in prose and in verse -- and today, almost a decade after his death, his work is beginning to see print in German and French editions, as well as in paperback under the Ballantine imprint . . . The tales in this volume have not hitherto been collected. They represent all the fiction left to be published in book form . . . “ From the lower front flap of the dust jacket: “The jacket is the work of Lee Brown Coye.” From the rear flap of the dust jacket: “ . . . CLARK ASHTON SMITH . . . Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) spent all his life in his native California. he was born in mining country, at Auburn, east of Sacramento, and lived there for most of his life previous to his marriage to Carol Dorman, when he moved to Pacific Grove, where he died. Smith was widely known as a lyric poet of great distinction before most of his contemporary fantasistes had begun to make their reputations, though he came into his own as a writer of memorable macabre short stories and freshly imaginative science fiction in the 1920’s and 1930’s. In addition to writing, Smith painted and created unique and fantastic sculptures, now much sought after by collectors . . . Though almost entirely self-educated, smith was widely published during his lifetime. His markets included The London Mercury, The Yale Review, Munsey’s, Strange Tales, Smart Set, The Black Cat, Poetry, Weird Tales, The Arkham Sampler, Wonder Stories, Amazing Stories, Comet Stories, La Paree, and many other magazines. During his lifetime he published seven collections of poems -- THE STAR-TREADER AND OTHER POEMS, EBONY AND CRYSTAL, SANDALWOOD, ODES AND SONNETS, NERO AND OTHER POEMS, THE DARK CHATEAU, SPELLS AND PHILTRES -- and four of short stories -- OUT OF SPACE AND TIME, LOST WORLDS, GENIUS LOCI AND OTHER TALES, and THE ABOMINATIONS OF YONDO . . . OTHER DIMENSIONS is the third collection to be published posthumously; it was preceded by POEMS IN PROSE and TALES OF SCIENCE AND SORCERY; it will be followed by SELECTED POEMS and an omnibus, THE BEST FANTASTIC TALES OF CLARK ASHTON SMITH . . . “ From the lower rear flap of the dust jacket: “The portrait of Clark Ashton Smith on the back of the jacket is a self-portrait drawn in his third decade.” ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its traditional Arkham House Holliston Black Novelex binding with bright gilt lettering on the spine of the book. This book is so tight and square that it actually appears to be an unread copy. The book has the correct gray endpapers. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $6.50. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. The dust jacket artwork is by the legendary artist of the macabre (often used by Arkham House to illustrate its dust jackets and for interior illustrations), the unequaled Lee Brown Coye. There is a wonderful full sized self-portrait drawing of Clark Ashton Smith on the entire rear panel of the dust jacket. ____________________________________________________ EBAY SHIPPING CHANGES: EBAY is now forcing me to buy insurance (if I choose to do so) to send packages out using the EBAY shipping system. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to "give" these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are listed for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end a listing early if this item sells elsewhere. _________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. _________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. I am happy to set up flexible PAYMENT and/or HOLD PLANS for any book(s) that you bid on and win.

Shipping: $4.00 for USPS Media Mail shipping. $10.00 for USPS Priority Mail shipping. Buyers who wish to have packages sent to addresses outside of the U.S. are required to pay for the postage necessary to send such packages. Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. You must be willing to pay for non-USPS Media Mail shipping charges or for international shipping charges. I reserve the right to negate a purchase if you are unwilling to pay for the correct shipping charges either to an address in the U.S. or if international shipping is required. I am happy to set up flexible payment and layaway plans if these options make it easier for you to participate in bidding and winning. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you.

Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won't guarantee their books, doesn't have a return policy, or doesn't correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
