A modernist using strong vibrant colors, enhancing the dramatic quality of the scene, with thick brush loads of paint, in much the same way as her modernist peers were doing like Marquerite Zorach and Helen Torr.Nevermore Oil on Canvas Board 18” x 24” Signed on back Modernist Painter Clare Shenehon (Boyd), American 1895-1986 Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota She attended Sweet Briar Academy, which ceased operating in 1919, a boarding school for high school girls that was part of Sweet Briar College She returned to Minneapolis upon graduating and attended The Minneapolis School of Art where she won 1st prize for sculpture and drawing. She moved to New York City and took classes at The Art Students League and studied with George Luks, Boardman Robinson. She also attended New York University. She took a position as art teacher at the Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey and was co-director of the Pinehave Retreat for Artists. She married fellow Artist Fiske Boyd who she met at the Art Students League. They lived in Summit, NJ and Plainfield, New Hampshire Both exhibited their art thorough the Mid Atlantic and New England area and her work was review by the famed critic Forbes Watson and correspondence with her is in the art files of the Smithsonian. Clare and her husband co-wrote and published a history of Plainfield, New Hamphire Bellow is a charming mention in the Alumni Magazine from her boarding school Sweet Briar Academy Alumnae Association 1936 “Clare Shenehon Boyd was good enough to send us the announcement of an exhibition of her paintings which was sponsored by the Summit, N. J., Art Association. The exhibition was opened by a tea Sunday. February 19th, and continued through March 8th. Mrs. Boyd is the art instructor at the Kent Place School in Summit and has an attractive apartment there”.
