Description: AMERICAN CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION STAFF & FIELD OFFICER SWORD SCHUYLER HARTLEY & GRAHAM N Y WITH DATED BLADE MADE BY COLLINS TO CAPTAIN W.H. BEEBE FROM ESSEX BRIGADE. WHAT MAKES THIS SWORD RARE IS THAT THE COLLINS BLADE IS DATED 1862, MOST DID NOT HAVE A DATE. COLLINS ALSO MADE BLADES FOR TIFFANY. WHEN YOU BUY THE BEST YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO MAKE EXCUSES LATER. This sword has a large guard common to a Staff & Field sword, but without the US, and is often called a Foot Officers sword. In fact, it could be considered as both since many Staff & Field officers and Foot Officers carried this style sword. This is a nice looking Civil War sword from a tough to find retailer! It is an original Civil War era officer's sword in scabbard. This is the version that was made by the Collins firm of Hartford, Connecticut and is so marked at the base of the blade along with the 1862 production date. Collins was one of the premiere manufacturers of edged weapons in America during the Civil War. At the base of the blade etching you see the clear and desirable retailer engraving of "SCHUYLER HARTLEY & GRAHAM NEW YORK". They sold many of the finer military items during the Civil War. What makes this sword stand out so vividly is the blade detail work. It has the etching which has the gold wash to make the detail stand out and it is gorgeous. You can still clearly see the etching on each side with the floral and patriotic designs on the blade. The front of the blade has the spread wing eagle with the "E PLURIBUS UNUM" below the eagle. The back has the "US" letter with the custom presentation in the center. It reads "Presented to Capt. W.H. BEEBE, Co. B, 2nd Regt. Essex Brigade, by C.W. BEEBE, H.M. EVANS , W.H. FERNALD, C.T. ROWE". I have some printed history on the regiment but Captain Beebe needs more research. Two of the names show up in the rosters of the 7th New York National Guard Infantry of New York City. The William H. Beebe mustered out in September of 1862 which could be when he went into this regiment and received the sword. Or at least planned on joining them. This one has the ornate leather grip handle and it is present and has a beautiful look. The wire is the original twisted double strand brass wire that is complete with a fine look. It has the brass handguard and pommel cap with a light golden patina all over the brass. There is a lot of gold gilding remaining in the protected areas of the brass. The sword is accompanied by the original leather and brass scabbard. The scabbard is complete with the leather body with the brass drag and top mount as well as the brass middle mount. The lower section of the leather down by the drag has a well made, simple repair to a break. You can tell it was done eons ago. This is a fine sword with an excellent blade with the beautiful presentation.
