Description: A pair of original sixth thermoplastic hard cases, each approx 2 3/4" x 3 1/4" inner diameter, 3 3/4" x 3 3/8" outer diameter. One case is black with a with with maker label inside label, much stained, for A.P. Critchlow & Co , and 1856, 1857 date patents. The case has a pleasing scene of a boy sailing a boat, and a shield with anchor below, possibly a mourning case for a child. The case has a loose brass hinge that needs to be re-glued and is missing the inside velvet lining, with a shallow 3/4" chip in an outer case edge. The second case is brown with an ornate scrollwork botanical design, complete insides, and the gilt brass frame contains a lock of light brown hair with an added blue silk backing as a memento mori , beneath the complete label for A.P. Critchlow& Co Union Daguerreoype, with patent applied for. The pair both have minor nicks on the outer edges. AP Critchlow was the inventor of the Union Thermoplastic hard case.
