CIVIL WAR ORIGINAL MODEL M1855 SPRINGFIELD MUSKET TUMBLER AND WIRE PUNCH TOOL. This original Model 1855 Tumbler and Wire Punch tool was used during the Civil War. One Tumbler and Wire Punch was issued with every ten muskets, making it one of the rare tools used during the Civil War. They were not made for carbines. The smaller of the two pins pushed out the band springs of the stock when needed. The larger pin was inserted into the hole in the lock tumbler left when the screw was removed. Then the other end of the tool could be hit with a hammer to push the tumber from the lockplate. The swing arm moves. The tool measures 3.5 inches. We combine shipping. We combine shipping. I had a large collection of Civil War Springfields. So, I will be listing many more tools and parts. Please review the pictures carefully, as they are also part of the description. I'm selling my collection that I have been collecting for more than 50 years. I am selling due to my age. My passion is history, and I desire that my vintage militaria items go to collectors so that our past lives on and the items will continue to be preserved. Many many years ago, a collector friend of mine came over to see my collection. He said to me, "you do not own these items; they are simply on loan to you until another collector buys your items to enjoy and preserve." Years later, I realized just how exact his words were. Please, I want only collectors to buy my collection. It is important to me that vintage items are preserved for years to come for history. This item has been in my collection for many years. My collections are in rooms that do not get any outside light. Therefore, you won't find any fading with my militaria items in a smoke-free environment. No cats and only a little Yorkie occasionally. CIVIL WAR ORIGINAL MODEL M1866 RIFLE MUSKET PIN PUNCH COMBINATION TOOL. The M1866 Rifle Musket was a unique weapon and several of its parts, particularly the hinge pin screw and firing pin retaining nut required special tools for dismounting. The hinge pin screw required two tools to be used simultaneously--a special forked spanner wrench to hold the nut on one end and a screwdriver to turn the slotted head on the other end. The screwdriver required had been added to the pre-Civil War Band Spring and Tumbler Punch, now a M1866 Combination Tool. The M1866 Manual (7) indicates this tool as follows, "There is a screwdriver on the band spring punch to used on the screw head in connection with the forked screwdriver." This modified band spring punch is not common and is often overlooked by collectors. It was unique to the M1866 and later publications such as the 1874 and 1882 manuals show only the original, pre-War configuration, i.e. no screwdriver modification. One specimen is known to have U.S. stamped on both sides of the leg. This information was taken from the book Gun Tools Their History and Identification by James B Shaffer, Lee A. Rutledge, and R Stephen Dorsey on page 165. We combine shipping. I had a large collection of Civil War Springfields. So, I will be listing many more tools and parts.
