Description: This is a nice example of a Civil War Model 1860 naval cutlass as made by Ames. The right ricasso has an anchor and 186(2) date. Right ricasso does not have the Ames marking but is N.J. marked for the state of New Jersey. It has been speculated that New Jersey may have had a contract with Ames for these and the Ames markings not applied. Perhaps for their Revenue Service? Leather covered wood grip is 100% intact but does have some scuffing. You can see it once had the twisted wire wrap but now all gone. It has also been speculated that the wire was removed on purpose sometime in the service life of these. Nice brass bowl and pommel with much age darkening. Looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a very long time. 14M / 38 is stamped into inside top of guard. These numbers ARE NOT rack numbers but indicate the number made, like serial numbers. I believe this particular number indicates the 14 thousand 38 one made. I don't see any inspectors markings on pommel. 26 inch blade is good with some age staining and several small nicks along edge. Looks like original edge. Nice tip. Entire cutlass is tight. No movement. All in all a nice cutlass with the N.J. marking that is not often seen. IF YOU ARE TRUELY INTERESTED MESSAGE ME...
