Description: George W Pennington, a resident of Decorah, Iowa enlisted with the First Iowa Cavalry in 1862, serving to 1866 when the unit was still serving in Texas after the War. Like most Iowa Civil War volunteers, Pennington was not born in Iowa; he was born in Canada. Private Pennington served well and was promoted through the ranks to Sergeant by the War's End. The 1st Iowa Cavalry served and fought in many skirmishes in Missouri and Arkansas and Sergeant Pennington finished the War with his Troop in Austin, Texas.
