The movie concerns a U.S. sailor, on medical leave status with the Navy, who falls in love with a prostitute and ends up becoming a father figure to her mixed race son. The film is one of two films that was adapted from a novel by Darryl Ponicsan. The other is THE LAST DETAIL and it too was released in 1973. Frequently the two are confused because both were critical successes. Marsha Mason was nominated for an Oscar for her performance, and the film was nominated for a Golden Globe Best Picture. Darryl Ponicsan has had a very good career, including writing the novel and the screenplay for Richard Linklater's film LAST FLAG FLYING (2017).
