Description: This rare antique 3-volume book set of “The Church History of Britain,” was written by Thomas Fuller D.D. and published in London in 1842. Printed by James Nichols, Hoxton-Square. Printed for Thomas Tegg, 73, Cheapside. The books are beautifully bound in leather and are inscribed with a personalized letter. Inscription indicates the set was given to Philip Freeman by R. Le Marchant in 1843. Philip Freeman was a significant figure in the history of the church. A letter is also included from Ann Freeman, wife of Archdeacon Philip Freeman, to a Mr. [F. J.] Coleridge, shortly after the archdeacon’s death in February 1875. Letter inscription reads: “Mr. F. J. Coleridge from Mrs. Freeman In memoriam Mar. 2, 1875 My Dear Mr. Coleridge, May I venture to ask you to find a place in your library for the accompanying books. I thought you might like to have something that belonged to the Archdeacon to remind you of a pleasant friendship in days that are past. I shall always remember gratefully many kind[illegible] you rendered him whilst we were at [illegible], but above all the great kindness at the last. With kindest regards to Mrs. Coleridge and yourself [illegible]. Yours very truly, Ann Freeman” The set is a valuable addition to any collection of antiquarian and collectible books, particularly anglophiles and scholars of the church history in England.
