The title of this work is the Chapel (wasyside chapen on the Rothenburger Straße near Görlitz and is dated from 1790-1799. It shows two men talking on the road with a few small buildings in front of them and the Chapel on the right. It is annotated in pencil "F. Kobell " at the bottom outside of the lower right margin of the print. It is also annotated in pencil, on sheet that it is pasted to, "Ferd. Kobell / ...Illegible.../ 1740-1799 / IT12982oo". These pencil annotation were likely added by a previous collector / dealer attempting to identify the print, but this is an incorrect attribution, as it is not be Kobell, but by Christop Nathe. Christoph Nathe (1753 Nieder-Bielau near Penzig - 1806 Schadewalde near Marklissa). German miniature painter, watercolorist, draftsman and etcher. Alongside Franz Gareis and Heinrich Theodor Wehle, an outstanding painter of Upper Lusatia of the time. Coming from a farming family, he received his first drawing lessons from Johann Gottfried Schultz. In 1774 he went to Leipzig to study under Adam Friedrich Oeser. 1783/84 traveled to Switzerland. 1787 Director of the Görlitz drawing school and taught at the grammar school. 1799 gave up his post as director. 1801 traveled to Rome. The most extensive collection of his works is in the Cultural History Museum in Görlitz. His work is featured in numerous museum collections worldwide. Measurements: Size of sheet: 5 x 6 1/4 in, size of engraving: 2 3/4 x 4 1/8 inches Condition: Very good condition. Minor stains commensurate with age and use. There are some crease markings mainly on the margins from that appear to be from an exacto knife, but paper is not cut, simple indented. Lightly pasted to conservationn paper with conservation tape at top.
