Binding: Hardcover Condition: Good+ with no dust jacket. Description: Library stamps/marks/labels/pocket/slip, edgeworn contemporary boards, spine taped, light text tone, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover.; German language. Two works by German diplomat and scholar Bunsen on St Ignatius of Antioch. While Bunsen was Ambassador to England, William Cureton translated, from a Syriac manuscript that had been found in the monastery of St. Mary Deipara, and wrote The Ancient Syriac Version of the Epistles of S. Ignatius in 1845. Cureton "asserted without hesitation that the original and genuine epistles of Ignatius had now been found; that the versions G[1] and G[2] were nothing but interpolations and expansions in support of a later state of ecclesiastical development; that the four epistles Ad Magnesios, Smyrnaeos, Philadelphenos, and Trallianos, were mere fictitious compositions, etc. Bunsen exerted himself much to introduce these views in Germany (D. drei echten u. vier unechten Briefe d.Ignatius, Hamburg, 1847, and Ignatius von Antiochien u. s. Zeit, Hamburg, 1847)." - G. Uhlhorn, "Ignatius of Antioch," Philip Schaff, ed., A Religious Encyclopaedia or Dictionary of Biblical, Historical, Doctrinal, and Practical Theology, 3rd edn Funk & Wagnalls Company, 1894, page 1059. Hard-to-find volume containing both of Bunsen's two works on St Ignatius of Antioch, in support of Cureton's views on authenticity of various Letters. ; Ex-Library; Vol. 1/2/2024; 0 pages.
