Chris Van Allsburg illustratesand writes award-winning children’s books—such as Jumanji and _The Polar Express_—populating them with eerie drawings that accentuate storylines confusing reality with make-believe. A celebrated figure in children’s literature, Van Allsburg has been awarded multiple Caldecott Medals and the Regina Medal for lifetime achievement. He began his career as a Sculptor after studying woodcarving, resin molding, and bronze casting at the University of Michigan and obtaining an MFA degree in sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design. Van Allsburg exhibited his sculptures in the late 1970s at New York’s Alan Stone Gallery; Stone encouraged the artist to experiment with drawing. His drawings were then exhibited at a 1978 group show at the Whitney Museum of Art. The artist’s book, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi debuted the following year; in it, a boy chases his dog through a magician’s topiary garden as imagined in fantastical illustrations such as Garden of Abdul Gasazi (1978).
