Description: This Chokwé mask is complete with all its attributes.Chokwé pwo masks, among the many "akishi" (indicating power), are exclusively female representations which are accompanied by accessories and adornments. Joined to their male counterparts "Cihongo", recognizable by their large tray-shaped headdress. The characteristic patterns on the forehead and cheekbones are part of the Chokwé aesthetic canons but also served as public markers of ethnic identity. This cruciform pattern on the forehead has a cosmogonic meaning. Pointed teeth were a criterion of beauty. These masks were mainly worn during initiation ceremonies for the transition to adulthood, marking among other things the end of the privilege between a son and his mother. Checkerboard scars on the cheeks refer to the mother's grief.
