BEN CRENSHAW: ONE OF THE NICEST GOLFER AND GENTLEMEN IN THE GOLFING WORLD. Although some professional golfers have won more major tournaments and others have collected more in winnings, Ben Crenshaw remains one of the most popular and talented players in golf, and now continues his contributions to the game as a golf course architect, partnered with Bill Coore. His all-American looks, charisma, and grace under pressure have made him a gallery favorite from his days at the University of Texas, where he was heralded as the next Jack Nicklaus, to the 1984 Masters Tournament, where he ended a decade of frustration to capture his first major championship title. His second victory at Augusta in April of 1995 secured his place in golf history. Ben Daniel Crenshaw was born on January 11, 1952 in Austin, Texas to Pearl (Johnson) Crenshaw, an elementary school teacher from Tazewell, Virginia, and Charles Edward Crenshaw IV, an attorney who had worked as an assistant to State Attorney General Price Daniel. The Crenshaws gave Ben his middle name in honor of Daniel, who later became a United States senator and governor of Texas. Ben Crenshaw has two siblings: Bonnie, who is ten years his senior, and Charles Edward V, who is one year older. Members of the family treasured Pearl Crenshaw, and her death of a heart attack in 1974, during Ben's second year on the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tour, traumatized them. (FROM BEN CRENSHAWS HOME PAGE) Lee McLeod Janzen, born on August 28, 1964, is an American professional golfer renowned for his two U.S. Open victories in 1993 and 1998. He is currently active on the PGA Tour Champions and has achieved eight wins on the PGA Tour. Janzen's PGA Tour career began in 1989, highlighted by his U.S. Open wins. In 1993, he triumphed over Payne Stewart at Baltusrol in Springfield, New Jersey, tying the 72-hole U.S. Open scoring record with 8-under-par. In 1998, he secured his second U.S. Open title at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, overcoming a five-stroke deficit on the final day, the most significant final-round comeback in the U.S. Open since Johnny Miller's victory in 1973. Additionally, Janzen claimed victory at The Players Championship in 1995, a premier PGA Tour event known for its substantial prize fund. He has also been ranked in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking. Corey Pavin achieved his first PGA Tour victory at the 1984 Houston Coca-Cola Open. Throughout the next decade, he won at least one significant tournament each year, either domestically or internationally, and topped the PGA Tour's money list in 1991. His career highlight was his only major victory at the 1995 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Coming into the last round three strokes behind Greg Norman and Tom Lehman, Pavin made an extraordinary four-wood shot on the final 72nd hole—a 450-yard par 4—driving the ball 228 yards to land just five feet from the hole, securing the title. Chip Beck was the runner-up at the 1993 Masters Tournament and tied for runner-up at the 1986 and 1989 U.S. Open Championships. He participated in the Ryder Cup three times, in 1989, 1991, and 1993, and won the Vardon Trophy in 1988. Beck Mr 59 scored a round of 59 during the third round of the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational at Sunrise Golf Club (par 72) in Las Vegas, Nevada, becoming one of only six PGA Tour players to achieve this feat. His round featured 5 pars and 13 birdies, setting a PGA Tour record for birdies in a single round, including a three-foot putt on the 18th hole. Beck finished the tournament tied for third. Additionally, he achieved a hole-in-one (also known as a double eagle) on the par-4 9th hole during the first round of the 2003 Omaha Classic, a Nationwide Tour event, marking the first in Nationwide Tour history and the second under the PGA Tour umbrella. (Wikipedia) Steve Pate has claimed six PGA Tour victories, beginning with the 1987 Southwest Golf Classic and culminating with the 1998 CVS Charity Classic. His most successful years were 1988, which included two victories and a 12th place finish on the money list, and 1991, highlighted by five top-3 finishes, a win at the Honda Classic, earnings of $727,997, and a 6th place on the money list. Notable achievements in major tournaments are his T-3 placements at the 1988 U.S. Open and the 1991 Masters. Pate has garnered over 70 top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events and has been ranked within the top-50 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Steve Pate's career has been marred by injuries. A three-car crash at the 1991 Ryder Cup and a severe car accident in 1996, which resulted in a shattered wrist, significantly impacted his prime playing years. Nevertheless, he staged a remarkable return to the PGA Tour, achieving a T-4 finish at the 1999 Masters and setting a record with seven consecutive birdies in the third round, a record that Tiger Woods later matched. His 13th place on the 1999 money list secured him the PGA Tour's Comeback Player of the Year award. Steve Pate was a member of the winning 1991 and 1999 Ryder Cup teams. As he entered his 40s, he split his time between the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour, achieving a victory at the 2010 Pacific Rubiales Bogotá Open at the age of 48, his first professional win since 1998.
