Description: UNight Banquet of Han Xizai by Gu Hongzhong, Stream and Mountain in Distance by Xia Gui,Southern Song Dynasty, hand scrollInk on paper, 20.5 x 489.1 cm, National Palace Museum, Taibei, ChinaXia Gui byname Yuyu was a native of Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou of Zhejiang Province) was an Editorial Assistant in the Painting Academy during reign of Emperor Ningzong (1195 - 1224).A contemporary of Ma Yuan (1140 - 1225) , he inherited the landscape style of Li Tang (1066-1150) . His simple composition shows a depth and distance in nature and his brushwork is sharp and vigorous. He was skilled in applying a texture stroke that looked like traces of chopping of an axe. He and Ma Yuan are known as Ma and Xia. This painting presents scenery along rivers and lakes in the south of China in a sunny day. Peaks, rocks, dense groves, pavilions, bridges, villages, thatched houses, fishing boats and sails on water are concisely but realistically depicted. Rocks in the painting are outlined with a blunt brush keeping the brush tip at the centre of the stroke. Texture strokes in the shape of large and small traces of axe chopping and sharp line with a nail cap are used together withdots. The nine-meter hand scroll is a monumentin the extant paintings of the Southern Song Dynasty. Noteworthy is that such landscape with hard strokes is usually executed on silk but this one is on paper.
