Description: You are bidding on a large original antique print from an 1880s illustrated journal. The quality of the printing from that era was exceptional. It depicts Chinese funeral customs at the former Lone Mountain Cemetery in San Francisco California. A Taoist or Buddhist prayers monk prays over the mourners. Incense, Joss paper and full cooked piglets are presented. Musicians and cymbols are sounded. Grieving family members lay on the graves. Two Westerners watch. Lone Mountain is a historic hill in west-central San Francisco, California and the site of the private University of San Francisco (USF, previously the San Francisco Lone Mountain College for Women). It was once the location of Lone Mountain Cemetery, a complex encompassing the Laurel Hill, Calvary, Masonic, and Odd Fellows Cemeteries. The graves in these cemeteries, along with most graves in San Francisco, were moved to Colma by the 1940s During Chinese funerals, offerings of food items, incense, and joss paper are commonly presented. The offering of food and joss paper signifies the continuing interdependence between the deceased and their living descendants. Taoist or Buddhist prayers are sometimes carried out by monks, to help the deceased's soul to find peace and escape a fate of becoming a "restless ghost".The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 16 inches (28 x 40.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a caption below. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is a soft fold through the middle, typical of a large stack of newspapers that have been folded. It should flatten nicely when framed. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
