Description: Exquisitely hand-pained, late Qing dynasty, famille rose plate in overglaze enamel with butterfly. Accordingly to Chinese tradition, butterflies are an auspicious sign. They convey a wish for longevity, and were therefore often used to decorate birthday gifts or lanterns given during the Autumn Moon Festival: on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar (usually around September). Encircling the entire rim of the plate is a dense depiction of butterflies and insects with medallions of roses repeating clusters highlighted by metallic gold gilt. Intricate hand detailing in gold is also reflected in each individual butterfly against a range of different gradated color schemes per every set of wings, creating a visual feast for the eyes. The colors are sumptuous and saturated and the design meticulously hand-painted. Suggest you expand the photos to achieve the best clarity and detail. This rare find is in surprisinglly good condition given its 100+ years.. There are slight rim frits as shown as well as minor gilt loss from use in the circle surrounding the center medallion. Diameter 7 1/8" (18cm) 05.11.7776 #3
