More About the Festival---In September of 2016, Atlanta-raised rapper and entertainment favorite Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, created PHAROS: an immersive concert hosted in California’s famous Joshua Tree National Park. Glover used this experience to debut his third album Awaken, My Love! in its entirety three months before its release as well as to reveal his more ethereal ambitions with his fans. With his New Zealand installation of PHAROS, Gambino brought this experience to the southern hemisphere after two intervening years of enormous commercial and critical success to promote what will presumably be his final album under his rapper name.Located in New Zealand’s Tapapakanga Regional Park nearly 50 miles east of Auckland, PHAROS was a self-described “holy place,” designed for “shared vibration for human progress.” Attendees were asked to dress in their frequency color of green, contrasting with the 2016 PHAROS frequency of blue. The commitment to metaphysical themes, while not adhered to by all attendees, successfully set the event apart from a typical Childish Gambino concert. Attendees also had the option to camp in either their own tents or PHAROS designed ones.PHAROS offered a total of four attractions within its grounds. The first two – the Dome and the Village – hosted Gambino’s show and a series of local DJs leading up to Gambino’s performance. The aforementioned themes were more visibly seen in the event’s latter two attractions – Newcastle and the Theater – that offered different types of immersive art experiences. Newcastle involved two fluorescently lit cubes on either side of a white-lit lobby – truth and meditation. I went through the red cube for meditation, which really just involved 8-10 people lying on a massive bean bag for about 7 minutes in a room filled with foggy incense. The PHAROS Theater, on the other hand, displayed footage of industrial Asian megacities and different anime clips until the sun had set with a backdrop of the ocean.Having reached Tapapakanga Regional Park around 4pm, I spent about four hours exploring these exhibits. While some of the attractions felt a bit far-reaching in terms of their commitment to abstract concepts, the consistency was impressive. By the time we entered the Dome, we had to enclose our phones in “Yonder” pouches with magnetic seals – ones that could only be opened by staff members once Gambino’s performance finished. After nearly two hours of waiting, the floor surrounding the 360-degree stage within the Dome was filled, and Childish Gambino came on.Unlike a typical Childish Gambino concert, the PHAROS show was set underneath a planetarium-like dome with visuals ranging from lava monsters with laser eyes to celestial and aquatic landscapes. During PHAROS, an entire live band and gospel choir elevated every soulful belt Gambino is impressively capable of producing, and the most captivating moments of PHAROS came from these shrieks. Given the absence of a Childish Gambino tour following the release of his 2016 Awaken, My Love! until September of 2018,PHAROS showcased both unreleased Gambino tracks as well as live renditions of hits like “Redbone,” “Terrified,” and “Me and Your Mama.” Beyond his existing catalogue of music, Gambino’s new songs seemed to amplify the already bold steps he made on AML, seen with the more soul-based dance tracks as openers and his strongest use of auto tune on an unnamed track.Donald Glover is known to favor secrecy leading up to the release of any of his works, and PHAROS is no exception. With the vast majority of attendees rightfully expecting him to perform his upcoming, unreleased album in its entirety, Gambino instead chose to handle this PHAROS installation more like a concert with a set list similar to his recent stint of U.S. shows. Whether set list changes were made following Glover’s decision to cancel concerts leading up to PHAROS or based around him breaking his foot last September, we can only speculate why this PHAROS differed from its past form.To say, however, that Gambino’s decision to deviate from the initial PHAROS formula was a disappointment would be untrue. Glover not only hid any sign of his major injury as he danced and contorted, but also weaved his newer, funkier songs as seamless complements to his already diverse body of work. PHAROS is a creation that can be born only out of the psyche of an artist like Glover. In citing his choice of Tapapakanga, Gambino emphasized the importance of conversing with one another and chastising pollution in our world, and while PHAROS left us with no indication of when a new album would release, Gambino brought to New Zealand one of our final looks into only one of his artistic ventures.
