Description: The company was incorporated in 1836 and was initially prohibited from issuing paper money. During the Panic of 1837, the company resorted to issuing "certificates of deposit" beginning in May 1837. In 1849, the company split itself into banking and insurance divisions. In 1861, the banking operations were transferred to the Marine Bank of Chicago. It is suspected that the company's original name was purposely chosen to confuse it with the very successful Wisconsin Marine & Fire Insurance Co. This note was printed New England Bank Note Co.
