Chewed Civil War Bullets – Bentonville Battlefield - 4307

Description: The “chewed” lead bullets were recovered on the Bentonville Battlefield in North Carolina. They were not chewed by soldiers, but by pigs years after the battle. I have seen these as “pain” or “hospital” bullets for years and they are not. There are many articles out there; one of the best is on the National Museum of Civil War Medicine site concerning these bullets. They are just a curiosity artifact, nothing more. I have hunted a number of field hospital sites and never found one that was bitten. I and others in the Fredericksburg area have hunted a site on the Mine Run Battlefield we call the “Hog Farm”. Abandoned years ago, you can still see in the trees the old barbed wire (woods now) where a 2 acre section was used for livestock. The bullets and buttons on one side were untouched, on the other side everything was chewed like the pictured bullets. Unfortunately this section was held by troops from North Carolina where their state seal buttons were also chewed. The Battle of Bentonville (March 19 – 21, 1865) was fought in Johnston County, North Carolina, near the village of Bentonville. It was the last battle between the armies of Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman and Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston. They come as shown in a 4” x 5” riker style case. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also come with the set. Please see our "About” on front page for more information on the framing and artifacts.
