Description: VINTAGE NATIVE AMERICAN CHEROKEE WOOD ART SQUIRREL SCULPTURE EASTERN BAND OF CHEROKEE NC., SIGNED. THIS BEAUTIFUL AND EXPERTLY CARVED AND FINISHED CHEROKEE WOOD ART SCULPTURE MEASURES APPROX 10 1/4" IN. LONG X 6" IN. HIGH X 2 3/8" IN. WIDE/THICK. THE WOOD IS POLISHED AND SMOOTH. POSSIBLY CHERRY WOOD BUT NOT CERTAIN OF THIS DETAIL AS MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD WERE USED FOR CARVING BY CHEROKEE ARTISTS. THERE IS LOTS OF GLARE FROM THE OUTDOOR LIGHT. SO YOU WILL SEE VARIOUS LIGHT SPOTS ON THE POLISHED WOOD. THE SCULPTURE IS ILLEGIBLY ETCHED SIGNED ON BOTTOM UNDERSIDE ( AS SEEN IN PIC )AND VERY HARD TO MAKE OUT NAME COULD POSSIBLY BE WHC WHICH WOULD INDICATE WILLIAM H. CROWE ( 1921-1988 ) BUT PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS DETAIL AS I DO NOT KNOW FOR CERTAIN WHICH ARTIST NAME INITIALS THIS IS. SO AGAIN, I AM NOT CERTAIN OF THE NAME ON THE BOTTOM UNDERSIDE OF SCULPTURE WHICH IS BETWEEN THE TWO HIND LEGS TOWARDS THE BELLY PORTION. I AM NOT ABLE TO ADD ANY MORE PHOTOS FOR A MORE DETAILED OR CLOSE UP VIEW, THIS IS AS CLOSE AS IT GETS, YOU CAN HOOVER OVER THE PIC FOR A MUCH CLOSER VIEW. AGAIN, THE SCULPTURE IS SIGNED BUT BY WHICH CHEROKEE ARTIST I AM NOT SURE OF. IT DOES LOOK LIKE THE WORK OF WHC. THERE ALSO WAS A WELL KNOWN CHEROKEE ARTIST BY THE NAME OF AMANDA CROWE WHO CARVED SQUIRRELS AS WELL BUT MOSTLY PREFERRED CARVING BEARS. THIS WOODED ART, BEING A VERY IMPORTANT PIECE, IS GOOD-SIZED. THE SQUIRREL SCULPTURE HAS A LOVELY WOOD GRAIN. THERE WILL BE SOME SCATTERED SURFACE MARKS AND OR RUBS, SCRATCHES, DINGS, DENTS, SCUFFS, ALL THAT COMES WITH AGE, USE AND HANDLING.
