The piece is signed and dated in the plate on the lower left, CM Russell (Buffalo Skull) 1918. The scene features a caravan of men riding horses with pack horses in tow and shows the rich western landscape that Russell was so well known for. Charles Marion Russell is Montana’s finest artist and the most renowned and well-known cowboy artist of the 19th and 20th Century. These chromolithographs are the closest original piece to a true painting and are increasingly difficult to find. Research shows ‘The Custer Fight’ by C.M. Russell was sold on the public market for $6,000 at the Santa Fe Art Auction.
