Description: This is a signed letter by Sir Andrew Clark, M.D., 1st Baronet (1826–1893), a notable Scottish physician and pathologist. Andrew Clark was the doctor of such famous men and women as the great scientist Charles Darwin, Prime Minister William Gladstone, Alice James(the sister of William James and Henry James),and biologist Thomas Henry Huxley, among others. Clark was a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and a Fellow of the Royal Society. His funeral service was held in Westminster Abbey, during which Gladstone was a pall-bearer. The letter is addressed to Lord Carlingford (1823–1898),a British nobleman, whose full name and title was Chichester Samuel Parkinson-Fortescue, 2nd Baron Clermont and 1st Baron Carlingford The letter is handwritten in ink on a sheet ofstationery with the doctor's London address printed at the top (16 Cavendish Square. W.). The letter is about 7" by 4". The letter is undated, but someone has written the year 1888 near the top left corner. The letter is signed by Sir Andrew at the bottom of the page.
