This is the very first time that The Origin of Species was published in what is referred to as the ‘standard binding’, the style of case which characterized John Murray's Darwin titles from the 1880s until 1899. This is also a significant issue from the point of view that it was printed in the year of Darwin's death (the author died on the 19th of April, 1882). According to John Murray's records this issue (Freeman 407) was published in June. It was reprinted (with 19 lines on the verso of the title page) in December of the same year (Freeman 408, also Twenty-Fourth Thousand), perhaps due to a surge in demand for the book after Darwin's death. There is no record of the exact numbers printed, but the June issue is clearly far more scarce than the later one. DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION OF BOOK FOR SALE: A VG+ copy of the FIRST issue of The Origin in Murray’s so-called ‘standard binding’. Original green cloth, original chocolate endpapers. The cloth is in excellent condition with light wear only - few tiny nicks and very light rubbing. No restoration or repairs of any kind. Binding tight and square. Original endpapers starting.
