Description: Centennial History of Oregon, by Joseph Gaston1811-1912 Vol 4-Biographies. Owned By Silas Coats An interesting volume in itself, this was owned by a man who is mentioned in the biography of his father or Grandfather, Silas D. Coats, who died the year this was published. The senior Silas was a very busy and productive man who along with being a rancher and farmer, held the position of Marshall as well as other political offices in both California (Shasta County) and Monmouth in Oregon. He died, as I said, in 1912 and his wife of 54 years, whom he met on the wagon train west from Illinois to Shasta, followed him in death three days later. Silas Sr. lived to 84 years old,The younger Silas signed the book, more as a mark of ownership, but he did include his formal signature. It appears to be the cursive of a young man. (invshelf)
