How to Grow Cockscomb From Seeds Cockscomb is an annual that in some areas, thinks it's a perennial and produces a brightly colored, feathery flower blooms in the summer. Cockscomb is a tropical species, part of the amaranth family, that is heat and drought tolerant, but does not tolerate cold temperatures. Thus, they are typically started indoors when they are grown from seed. When growing cockscomb seed, you can expect the plant to develop flower blooms approximately 85 days after first planting them. Instructions 1.Wait until between three and four weeks before the last frost is expected in your area. Fill peat pots with a seed-starting mix until there only 1 inch of space at the top of the pot. 2.Insert three cockscomb seeds on top of the soil mix spacing them at equal distances apart. 3.Cover the seeds with an additional 1/4 inch of the seed-starting mix. 4.Water the peat pots until all of the soil and the pot is damp. Place a plastic bag on top of each peat pot securing them with rubber bands. This creates a mini greenhouse which assists in seed germination. 5.Set the peat pots in a warm location that has a temperature of between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. 6.Check the soil moisture daily after removing the plastic bags and spray the soil with water from a spray bottle to keep it constantly moist until the cockscomb seeds germinate. Germination occurs in approximately 10 days. 7.Move the pots to a brightly lit area once you see tiny seedling emerge from the soil. Monitor the seedlings until they each have two set of leaves and then pull out all but the strongest one from each pot. Easily grown in humusy, moderately fertile, consistently moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates light shade and dry soils. Thrives in hot and humid summers. Seed may be sown directly in the garden after last spring frost date. For earlier bloom, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost date. Set out seedlings or purchased plants after last frost date. Taller cultivars should be planted in locations sheltered from strong winds. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong bloom. Culture They are often grown as an edible crop in India, Western Africa, and South America. Their leaves and flowers can be used as vegetables. Reportedly used by Chinese herbalists to stop bleeding, treat diseases of the blood, and infections of the urinary tract.
