General Information: CPD stands for Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus), also commonly known as the Galaxy Rasbora. This small, colorful freshwater fish is popular in the aquarium hobby due to its striking appearance and peaceful nature. Here's some detailed information about them:1. Physical Appearance:Size: CPDs are very small fish, typically growing to about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) in length, making them ideal for small aquariums.Coloration: The most notable feature of the CPD is its iridescent blue body, often covered with sparkling spots that resemble stars, giving it the "Galaxy" name. The body has a light golden or orange hue, and their fins are usually transparent with a slight reddish tint.Sexual Dimorphism: Males are typically smaller, more vibrant in color, and more slender. Females are usually rounder, larger, and less brightly colored.2. Habitat and Distribution:Origin: CPDs are native to the Myanmar region (Burma), particularly found in the Shan State in the southeastern part of the country.Natural Habitat: In the wild, they are found in slow-moving, shallow streams with dense vegetation and clean, slightly acidic water. They thrive in water with a soft to medium hardness and enjoy environments with a lot of plants and hiding spots.3. Tank Requirements:Tank Size: Due to their small size, CPDs can live in tanks as small as 10 gallons (38 liters), but a larger tank will provide them with more space to swim and feel secure.Water Parameters:Temperature: 72-78°F (22-26°C)pH: 6.0-7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)Hardness: Soft to medium (1-15 dGH)Aquarium Setup: They appreciate densely planted aquariums with hiding spots and peaceful conditions. Soft substrates like fine gravel or sand are preferred, and the presence of live plants, driftwood, and small caves will make them feel more at home.Filtration: Ensure a gentle filter, as CPDs prefer slower water flow, which mimics their natural habitat.4. Diet:Omnivorous: Celestial Pearl Danios are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods. In captivity, they thrive on high-quality flake foods, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.Feeding Tips: They can also be given vegetable matter like spirulina or blanched vegetables. It's recommended to feed them small portions multiple times a day for optimal health and color enhancement.5. Behavior:Peaceful and Social: CPDs are very peaceful and do well in community tanks. They are best kept in small groups, ideally 6 or more individuals, as they are a schooling species. This also helps reduce stress and makes them feel more secure.Activity Level: While they are generally peaceful, CPDs are quite active swimmers, often darting around the tank, especially when they feel safe. They also like to occupy the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.Social Interaction: They tend to be shy, especially if housed with larger or more aggressive fish. Keeping them in a peaceful tank with other small, non-aggressive species is key to their well-being.6. Breeding:Breeding Difficulty: CPDs are egg-scattering fish that breed easily under the right conditions. However, they require specific conditions for breeding, including a slightly lower temperature (around 72°F or 22°C) and well-planted areas for egg deposition.Spawning Behavior: Males will chase the females, attempting to nudge them toward the plants where eggs are laid. Eggs are deposited on plants or substrate and can be difficult to spot. The eggs hatch in about 2-3 days, and the fry are very small, requiring infusoria or finely powdered food until they grow large enough to consume normal fish food.Fry Care: It's often recommended to move the eggs or young fry to a separate breeding tank to ensure their safety and increase survival rates.7. Health and Lifespan:Lifespan: CPDs typically live for about 3-5 years with proper care.Common Health Issues: Like most small fish, they can be prone to diseases such as Ich (white spot disease), fin rot, and velvet disease if water conditions are poor. Maintaining excellent water quality and avoiding overcrowding will minimize these risks.Stress: CPDs can become stressed easily, especially if kept in an aquarium with high traffic or aggressive tank mates. They do best in quiet, well-maintained tanks with stable water parameters.8. Popularity:Aquarium Hobbyists: Due to their small size, peaceful nature, and stunning appearance, CPDs are quite popular among both beginners and experienced aquarium enthusiasts. They are particularly appreciated in nano tanks and aquascapes due to their small size and striking beauty.9. Compatibility:CPDs are very peaceful and should be housed with other small, non-aggressive fish. Suitable tank mates include:Small Tetras (like Neon Tetras)Small RasborasCorydoras CatfishOther small peaceful speciesAvoid keeping CPDs with larger or aggressive species that may stress or prey on them. In summary, the Celestial Pearl Danio (CPD) is a small, beautiful, and peaceful species that makes an excellent addition to a well-maintained aquarium. Their unique, galaxy-like appearance and tranquil behavior make them a favorite among aquarium hobbyists. Proper care, a peaceful tank environment, and attention to water quality are key to keeping these charming fish happy and healthy.
