Description: Vintage carnival glass pitcher manufactured in India in the 1930's by the Jain Glass company in the "Shalimar" pattern in Marigold. The first documented Shalimar pitcher appeared on E-Bay in July, 2009. There were only two documented examples of Shalimar tumblers known in carnival glass literature when they appeared in the Standard Encyclopedia of Carnival Glass, 11th Edition (p. 239). Because a Shalimar pitcher was found with a red paper label with "Advance Firozabad" pasted on it, it is thought that Jain may not be the maker of this pattern. Many collectors of carnival glass are unaware that carnival glass was made in India, and many pieces have become quite rare. Information on Indian glassworks is hard to find and a lack of historical documents makes attribution very difficult. Some are marked: JAIN for the Jain Glass Works), PGW for the Paliwal Glass Works, AVM for AVM Glass Industries, and CB for an unknown Indian glass maker. But not every piece produced by these companies bears their maker’s mark. The Jain Glass Works, founded in 1928, in the northern town of Firozabad, India was undoubtedly the largest and most well-known of the Indian carnival glass manufacturers.
