Description: c 1890 ceramic stoneware humidor tobacciana Still smells like its original tobacco! Created for Cheltenham Training College (1847-1852), now known as University of Gloucestershire. Made by W & R Stoke-on-Kent Carlton Ware. Ceramic lid, brown glaze, textured ceramic exterior, ceramic and metal lid Porcelain shield says in Latin: Disce Ut Doceas / Cheltenham Training College ("Learn in order to Teach," so perhaps it was a college for future teachers.) Fabulous antique airtight lid! The lid is ceramic and has a very old (hard and dried) rubberized gasket that would have sealed tightly into the jar by way of a brass twist-and-screw mechanism, which you can see in the pictures. Very good antique condition - I see no cracks or hairlines. There are a few very minor (and very old) chips on the rim. The rubber gasket is dried and cracked from age. The metal brass mechanism is discolored. What an amazing gift this would be for your friend who collects tobacciana!
