Description: MARVEL COMICS Marvel Cinematic Universe MCU & Disney+ Comic Book First Appearance Key THE MARVELS (2023) After her surprise First Appearance in Marvel Studios' WandaVision (2021), actress Teyonah Parris returns to the MCU as the all-grown up MONICA RAMBEAU, now an agent of S.W.O.R.D. / S.A.B.E.R, to get a past grudge off her chest even as she becomes one of THE MARVELS. Quite notably, Monica Rambeau became Marvel Comics' first female 'Captain Marvel' in 1982 in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #14, some 30+ years before CAROL DANVERS ever adopted the moniker. As Captain Marvel, Monica was a very active member of The Avengers for most the following decade and played an important part in the first Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars against The Beyonder (1985). She finally achieved her own solo book with 1989's Giant-Size Special CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 (VOL 2). While the first issue of Volume Two was never intended to be kick-off an ongoing but instead just be the "Giant-Sized Special" as stated on its cover, a second issue was released four and a half years later (!) with the December '93 release of Captain Marvel #2 (Vol 2). Despite this unexplained delay, and an incorrect numbering on the cover (which numbers the book as #1), the issue's indicia describes the comic as being the second issue of Captain Marvel Vol 2. Like its "Giant-sized Special" predecessor, Issue #2 is a stand-alone story and once again stars Monica in the titular role. Had the cinematic Marvel Universe begun in the 80's instead of these more recent years, Monica Rambeau would be a much more relevant character than she appears to most modern fans. However, trailers from the upcoming The Marvels suggest that it will be none other than Monica who will be the very first hero of the MCU to make contact with a bona-fide X-MAN -- not an X-Man Variant -- hailing from the former Fox Marvel Universe's original X-Men trilogy of films. And that, we'd say, is a well-deserved honor... despite the fact that it leaves Monica trapped on the wrong side of an incursion. No such thing as a free lunch, eh, Monica?
