Published by Geo. B. Whittaker, London, 1825. A good edition of this first thus book, the original having been published in 1808 - see remarks below. In original marbled paper covered boards, green paper covered spine with pasted label. All edges are very worn and rubbed and hinges cracked. The front board panel is holding on by threads. Page edges are age/soil darkened and foxed. A bit of pencilled writing on the end papers. Minimal internal foxing, mostly on the maps. A previous owner inserted the place markers for the maps. The title page refers to 47 maps and the page listing "Maps Contained in the Volume" lists 47, including two plates each for Ireland, Scotland and Wales, however we were only able to locate one for Wales, which appears to be the standard. The frontispiece map of the British Isles, and the maps for Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Yorkshire are fold-outs. The section covering England and Wales numbers 865 pages, Scotland has 152 pages and Ireland has 40. Based on information in the Introduction: "This Dictionary was first published in 1808, and it is needless to state that is soon eclipsed every other work of the kind. It was at once adopted in Libraries as a valuable addition to the national literature, and in Public Offices and Counting-Houses, as a Book of indispensable reference and merited authority...The Maps have been revised, and have been so drawn as to bear an exact relation to the actual population of the difference places introduced; being the first general reformation of the kind made in an English Atlas..."Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition description.
