Stated Second Edition on copyright page with printing code "L-S" (November 1943).However, the book appears to actually be a second printing of the first edition for the following reasons: 1) The only copyright is 1942, while the second edition had a second copyright date of 1947 on copyright page (due to the presence of additional material dealing with the world in the aftermath of WWII)); 2) "Second Edition" is not printed on title page (whereas on the 1947 second edition, "Second Edition" is printed below the title and above the author's name title page); 3) "Second Edition" is not printed/stamped on spine of cover (whereas "Second Edition" is stamped on the spine below the author's name on the 1947 second edition); 4) Like the First Edition, this copy has x + 381pp; (whereas the Second Edition has xiv + 411pp.); 5) Does not include "Preface to the Second Edition" Regardless of whether this is a second printing of the first edition or first printing of the second edition, it is certainly a scarce and early printing in the year following original publication. Good condition; no dust jacket. Sporadic pencil marks & marginalia throughout; pencil marks on top corner of front endpaper. Binding solid but slightly slanted. Covers have rubbing at tips of corners & along edges; darkening to spine with rubbed titles but still legible; corners lightly bumped. Binding firm. Hinges are solid & not cracked. Ships carefully packed in a box.
