Description: On May 4, 1949 Capital Airlines inaugurated spur service from Williamsport to Philadelphia, via Reading; however, service to Reading was deferred until May 5, 1949 at the request of the airline. An unofficial cachet was provided by the local stamp club at Reading. There were no official cachets provided.This cover was one of only 235 pieces of mail carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 34 flight from Reading, Pennsylvania to Buffalo, New York (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as X34W12.Perry Nahl, a former Editor-in-Chief of The American Air Mail Catalogue, prepared the cover. On June 1, 1961, Capital Airlines was formally merged into United Air Lines.
