Description: THIS LOT CONTAINS A BLOCK OF 4 OF THE VERTICAL IMPERFORATE PAIR OF CANADA #604 IN MINT, NEVER HINGED, VERY FINE CONDITION. This stamp was printed in both sheet and coil form. In 1969 Canada Bank Note changed their method of producing coil stamps by using large continuous rolls of paper (web fed), and then cutting the stamps after each 100 rows. The stamps were then rolled and sealed into post office tubes containing a "stick" of 10 breakaway rolls of 100 stamps in each tube. The stamps had been rouletted between each coil to permit the postal clerk to snap off a coil of 100 stamps at a time, but the rouletting did not fully pass through the paper in all cases leaving the paper with a fine score line, but uncut, or, in a few cases no visible score line. By unrolling multiple coils without being snapped apart it was possible to find pairs, and/or blocks of stamps with no rouletting between, but only separated by perforations in the opposite direction. Blocks of four are far more scarce than the vertical pair. Hence you have this vertical imperforate coil variety, and is recognized by the Canadian Specialized catalog. In most cases, the rouletting leaves a score line even when not cutting through the paper. In few cases, there is no score line which makes this example far more desirable. The horizontal imperforate coil variety (not this offering) is recognized and is valued at $125.00 for the pair.
