Description: California Gold Rush 1850's antique brooch. Silver Snakes fight over Gold Nugget. Wow what an unusual piece! Large and heavy (18.9 grams) this piece was made during the legendary California gold rush of the early 1850's. The central element is a substantial natural panned gold nugget. The gold nugget includes some enigmatic pieces of river gravel (possible rose quartz?) which seem to shift tone in the light. Two finely rendered silver snakes wrap around the nugget as if to challenge one another. The scales of the snakes, eyes, mouths and other details are beyond fine, and all executed by hand. The workmanship is thrilling to behold in person and sure to catch every eye. The pin and closure at rear function well and secure. (I wore this on a jacket for months with no worries) This is a piece for a serious collector of Old West Americana. Measures approximately 39mm x 26mm (snakes) with the nugget measuring approximately 16mm x 11mm x 11mm. All original condition with wear commensurate with age. I collect gold and diamond jewelry from the Renaissance era to Age of Enlightenment era and beyond. The pieces I sell are from my personal collection and whenever possible I consult with leading experts prior to listing my items for sale. Described and listed to best of ability.
