Description: Cai Guo-Qiang and Pompeii by Jerome Neutres Presents the works and performances conceived by Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang for Pompeii, in a project based on the inescapable ties between the classical past and our present. FORMAT Hardcover LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description Cai Guo-Qiang, a Chinese artist known throughout the world for his exciting performances with fire, presents in this volume the works created in Naples as part of the project In the Volcano. With these works, resulting from his explosion workshop, the artist created a short circuit between our present and the memories of ancient Rome. Cai Guo-Qiang, as a modern Prometheus, plays with his mastery in dominating the fire, and drawing on the powerful and suggestive traditions of the oriental world he crafts pyrotechnic works and performances with which he invites us to rediscover the inescapable bonds between the classical past and the modern sensibility, and in particular between the explosion that in 79 A.D. destroyed Pompei - paradoxically preserving it for us - and artistic creation. Long Description In 2019, New York-based Chinese artist Cai-Guo Qiang (born 1957) was invited to create a work of art in the amphitheater of the Pompeii archaeological site. Inspired by the fate of the ancient Roman city, which was buried by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Cais work involved gunpowder, fireworks, an array of artifacts and a vast canvas. The performance culminated in an "excavation" of the resulting debris, which became part of Cais exhibition of related works at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. Cai Guo-Qiang and Pompeii: In the Volcano is published to document Cais work in Pompeii. The project at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples is part of an ongoing, multiyear series of exhibitions, An Individuals Journey Through Western Art History . Staging work in Moscow, Madrid, Florence and now Pompeii, Cai juxtaposes his work with the Western art historical canon.
