Other: Early Braun view of the Alpine meadow at the foot of the Swiss Alps with a couple of hikers at the left. Adolphe Braun (1812-1877) first trained as a designer of textiles in Paris before turning to photography in the early 1850s. He was well suited to both the aesthetic side as well as the business end of this new endeavor, capitalizing on his connections to the design world and arts community and tapping the new, massive tourist market that was to come. His still lifes, portraits and landscapes are second to none and he made an extensive record of views across Europe through the 1850s, 1860s and 1870s. His views of the Franco-Prussian War were some of the earliest military conflict photographs made. During his final years, he came full circle embarking on the reproduction of artworks for galleries, publications and institutions.
