Botanicals – PAXTON Sir Joseph Paxton Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants lithograph, original hand color, c. 1834-49 size approx. 6-1/4" by 9" These beautiful lithographed plates on high quality paper with original hand color are from Sir Joseph Paxton’s “Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants.” Some768 plates were published in 16 (4to sized) volumes (issued in monthly parts) c. 1834-49, by Wm. S. Orr & Co., Paternoster Row, London. The plates were drawn and engravedby F. W. Smith, or drawn and lithographed by S. Holden. Born in 1801, Paxton was a noted British horticulturist whose reputation eventually won him a seat in the House of Commons and a knighthood. Each single plate measures approximately 6-1/4 by 9” and each double plate measures approximately 9” by 11.” One edge is slightly uneven where the print was attached to the book, but this will not affect framing. Although most of these plates were purchased loose, the original text is available unless otherwise specially noted. Each plate bears the title of the plant as well, and a photocopy of the title page will be provided.
