C. F. Monroe Wave Crest KELVA Floral Decorated 8" Dresser Box, c. 1900 (#2)

Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a beautiful "Kelva" Art Glass dresser box by the C. F. Monroe Co., c. 1900. Kelva is a category of decoration applied to Wave Crest glass which was produced as an opal glass blank and then decorated. There were not as many Kelva decorated items produced so it is much scarcer than other Wave Crest pieces. Much of the opal glass known as Wave Crest was produced by the Mt. Washington Glass Co. and was then purchased by the C. F. Monroe Co. as glass blanks to be decorated by their artists. This box is the largest size box made by C. F. Monroe and is scarce for both the Kelva decoration and the size of the box. The design features a dark mottled olive/green background with beautifully hand painted floral design with ruby and white flowers with jeweled stamens. The top and base are fitted with a decorative brass collar with a tight hinge that opens and closes correctly. This box is marked with the Kelva trade mark stamp used by C. F. Monroe on their Kelva pieces. An example of this box is found on page 158 of the book "Wave Crest: The Glass of C. F. Monroe" by "Wilfred R. Cohen. Measures 3 1/4" high with a top diameter of 7" and base diameter of 8". Weighs 2.7 pounds. This nice box is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws.
