Description: Byzantine Processional Cross of the Universal Crosses Collection Approximate size 2 cm=0,79 inches "The original, is a processional cross from the Dokiariu Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece. It is made of bronzes and measures 95 cm in height, 60 cm in wingspan and 0.8 cm in thickness. The soft luster of the arms of this cross, with its exceptionally beautiful green patina, shows convex ends, with button ornamentation at the apexes. The foot, extension of the vertical arm, has been fixed to an inverted Byzantine capital. Its only decoration consists of the inscription engraved on both sides, which reads: "+ Christ the Lord...preserve this...city eternally in peace...understand, O nations, and surrender, for the Lord is with us and the Holy Mother of God". Delicate in design and of harmonious proportions, this type of cross was already known from the earliest times of Christianity. In not a few details, this particular specimen closely resembles some copper crosses dated to the 9th and 10th centuries, corresponding to Greek collections (Boura 1979. Byzantine and post-Byzantine art 1986) Likewise, we have evidence of some engraved crosses, similar to this one but with figurative themes (Byzantium 1994), or decorated with gold leaf or enamel, such as the cross of Adrianople (Boura 1879)."
