Building A Great Railroad A History Of The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company

Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: Building A Great Railroad A History Of The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company Building A Great Railroad A History Of The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company by Glenn Hoffman Hardbound with dustjacket 326 pages Copyright 1998 CSX Corporation (SMALL TEAR bottom edge of the dust jacket) This long-awaited history of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad almost remained unpublished. In 1967, shortly after the merger of Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line Railroads, Glenn J. Hoffman, a professor at the University of Florida, was commissioned to write a history of ACL. Professor Hoffman spent the next several years diligently researching and compiling data. In 1974, the completed manuscript was submitted to railroad officials. For reasons not now clear, the manuscript was relegated to a shelf and did not surface again for nearly a quarter of a century. In 1996, W. Thomas Rice, retired chairman and president of Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Coast Line Industries, inquired about the book. A search produced the original manuscript, and a renewed effort to publish this book began. Richard E. Bussard, then director-corporate communications for CS X Transportation, started dusting off the pages, verifying facts, collecting photographs and maps, and editing the manuscript. Working with retired SCL treasurer Leonard Anderson, a team of experts and historians developed the final text. Rail fans everywhere will enjoy this "official" history of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad from its early beginnings. It is filled with intriguing events, high finances and powerful leaders who made ACL one of America's great railroads. Glenn Hoffman grew up in the small northern community of Crandon, Wisconsin. Upon graduation from high school, he enrolled in Milwaukee State University and, like many young college men at that time, he enlisted in a naval reserve program. At the end of his freshman year, he was sent to Central Michigan University to begin a program leading to his commission as an officer in the United States Navy Reserve. It was not until the end of World War II that he completed his undergraduate education at CMU and was accepted into graduate studies in history at the University of Michigan. During his graduate program, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to complete his dissertation research in Brussels, Belgium, and was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Department of History at the University of Michigan in the summer of 1953. Dr. Hoffman became a highly respected teacher in the humanities at both Northwest Missouri State College and Michigan State University, prior to accepting a similar position at the University of Florida in the fall of 1957. When Florida's undergraduate general education program was reorganized, Dr. Hoffman moved into the Department of History, where he taught until his retirement. It was during his tenure in that department that Dr. Hoffman agreed to write this "chapter" in the history of the railroad industry. He would be immensely pleased to know his perspectives of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad are now able to be shared with others. Spanning the 133 years from 1834 to 1967, the history that follows chronicals the enormous number of acquisitions, mergers and consolidations that linked at least 125 small separate roads into a giant system that would provide efficient interstate rail service through entire regions of the country. As the ACL grew during its illustrious early history, there were periods of great growth and achievement, as well as periods of misfortune and disappointment. These events are well described by author Dr. Glenn H. Hoffman (now deceased), a professor of history at the University of Florida, who was retained by the company in the mid-1960s to record this history. A number of officers, as well as some employees, of Atlantic Coast Line contributed much time and effort to this project by providing research, personal accounts and other data to Dr. Hoffman, which became part of this history.
