The first Boy Scout Handbooks illustrated other designs but they were never created. The first Eagle Scout medal was presented in August 1912. Eagle Medals are classified by the manufacturer who produced the medals. In order from oldest to newest, these companies are: T.H. Foley (1912-1915), Dieges and Clust (1916-1919), Robbins (1920-1978), Stange (1968-1999), CFJ (1999-present). The Stange Company produced Eagle Awards for 31 years and during that time there were 6 significantly different Eagle Award Types produced, and with some having subtypes. Stange was initially contracted in 1968, and Robbins was still producing until 1978, so there is overlap between later Robbins and early Stange Types. In 1919, Ken Stange established a company bearing his name as a premier emblematic jewelry manufacturer, providing recognition awards to fraternal organizations throughout the United States. Then, as now, manufacturing awards of unsurpassed quality and offering excellent customer service are the foundation of the Stange Company. As the company grew, Stange expanded into manufacturing recognition awards for non-profit organizations and Catholic religious orders. Stange Company's reputation as a provider of highly intricate custom jewelry resulted in the commission to manufacture the Order of Solomon, considered one of the most intricate insignia ever produced. Today, Stange Company creates and manufactures insignia, medals and decorations for several heads of state and dignitaries including the State of Jordan, Queen Elizabeth II, and the King of Rwanda. Modeled after the Stange 1 medal, 1968-1970 In 1968 the Boy Scouts contracted with a second manufacturer to make the Eagle medals along with the Robbins Company. This type is somewhat rare and is actively sought among collectors. Identification: The Stange 1 resembled, and is easily mistaken for, the Robbins 4. No BSA, the beak is closed but it has a few subtle distinctions that make it easy to spot. There is a hallmark with a stylized ‘S’ in script form in a small box on the back of the tail feathers with the word ‘STERLING’ stamped below. It still retained the flat back but the Eagles chest is flatter and the scroll was modified into a new more angular design. Availability: Somewhat rare. Actively sought after. This auction is for a vintage Boy Scouts of America award pendant for the rank of Eagle Scout Medal made by the Stange Co. It is marked with the Stange mark, "S" inside a square and "STERLING" underneath. This award belonged to a young lad that is in his 60's now. He said he earned his award about the age of 17, which would make it around 1970 (ish). Size, as pictured, about the size of a penny (not included). This collection belonged to a life-long Scouter who passed away in 2000. He earned his Eagle award about the age of 17, which would make it around 1959 (ish). He spent his life devoted to Scouting serving as Scoutmaster and at Boy Scout summer camps for over 15 years in positions from counselor to eventually camp director. He was a ten year member and Vice President of the local Volunteer Fire Co., ten year member of the area Hazardous Materials Response Team and the town Tax Payers Association and was an Eagle Scout with Gold & Silver Palms, one of the highest ranks in Scouting. A bronze palm represents five additional merit badges, a gold palm 10, and a silver palm 15. 1 gold palm and 1 silver palm = 46 total merit badges (21 required + 25 additional) I cannot divulge his identity because I don't have the family's permission, nor sufficient background information on him. Condition: This handsome award is in excellent condition for being around nearly 50 years old. It has only the slightest tarnish from age. It is marked "STANGE" and "STERLING.
