Description: An original, large scale map of Derwent Water (Derwentwater and its Environs) by James Clarke. Engraved by Samuel Neele and published February 10th 1787, the map was one of 11 plates (this map is plate 6) in Clarke's guide: Survey of the Lakes of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. The map is unframed and unmounted, with folds as published. The map's large scale (approx 1:5500) is remarkable for its date, preceding the first 1:10000 OS map of the area by 60 years or more. The large scale affords great detail, with fields, landowners, villages, hamlets, individual farms, roads, woodlands and commons shown. Apart from strengthening verso along some folds, the map, which is comparatively rare, is in good condition.
